Bay windows are usually three- or five-panel configurations where the center panel faces forward and the side panels angle inward. The right window treatment depends on how the angles meet at the corners and whether the bay sits over a window seat or runs floor-to-ceiling.
Three-panel vs five-panel vs continuous wrap.
Three-panel bay
A wide center pane flanked by two angled side panes. Most common in OC. Angle between center and side panels is typically 22.5° or 45°.
Five-panel bay
Less common but appears in larger living rooms and primary suites. More angles to address with brackets and drapery hardware.
Panel-by-panel
Each pane gets its own shade, sized to the individual frame. Same shade type across all panels but each operates independently. The most common approach.
Continuous wrap
A single continuous drapery rod, cornice, or shutter system that wraps the angles of the bay. The most architectural look but requires custom hardware.
Five approaches for bay windows.

Plantation shutters for bay windows
Custom basswood plantation shutters built specifically for the bay configuration. Each pane gets its own shutter panel with specialized corner brackets that follow the bay angle. The most permanent architectural treatment.

Roman shades panel-by-panel
Roman shades installed per pane. Hunter Douglas Vignette is the cleanest look for bay windows because the rear-cord-free construction means the back of the shade is finished even when viewed from outside through the angled panes.

Roller shades panel-by-panel
Roller shades sized to each pane. Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades or Lutron-controlled rollers, motorized for synchronized operation across all panes. Cassettes or fascias to conceal the rolls.

Cellular shades panel-by-panel
Hunter Douglas Duette in single-cell or double-cell with LiteRise cordless lift. Best when thermal performance matters (bay windows over a window seat in a west- or south-facing room).

Drapery wrapping the bay
Custom drapery on a continuous wrap rod that follows the bay angles. Pinch pleat or ripple fold panels. The most formal treatment. Stationary panels at the corners, operable panels at the center. Often layered over Roman or roller shades.

A quarter inch per panel is invisible individually but reads as misaligned across a five-panel bay.— Field notes from bay window installs
Synchronization, depth, and the bay-window details.
On motorized bay window shades, alignment across panels matters. All shades should stop at the same height even at intermediate positions. Mounting and sizing details also matter more on bays than on flat windows.
Motorized synchronization
We use motorized shades from a single manufacturer (Lutron, Hunter Douglas, or matching Somfy motors) so the motors are synchronized via the same controller. Mixed-brand motorized installs on a bay window almost always end up out of sync.
Window seats and depth
Bays with window seats need extra-deep mounts because the seat often projects into the room. The shade or shutter has to be mounted forward enough to clear the seat surface.
Pane-by-pane measurement
Each pane is often a slightly different width (especially in older homes). We measure each pane individually and order shades to the exact measurements.
Panel-by-panel vs continuous wrap
Panel-by-panel works for any shade type and any bay angle. Continuous wrap requires specialized hinge brackets or bent drapery rods.
