Sliding glass doors are common across coastal Orange County architecture. Newport Beach and Laguna homes often have wall-of- glass sliders that open to a patio or pool deck. The right window treatment for a slider depends on whether it's used daily, how wide it is, and whether the door track stays open most of the time.
What makes sliders different from french doors.
Unlike french doors, sliders don't swing into the room. They slide on a track. That means anything mounted above the door clears the door operation cleanly. The treatment doesn't have to attach to the door itself. The challenge is the width: sliders are usually 6, 8, 10, or 12 feet wide. Horizontal shades wide enough for a typical slider get cumbersome to operate manually.
Stack to one side
All panels move to one side when the door opens. Best when there's room on one side for the stack.
Split-stack
Panels stack to both sides, parting in the middle. Best when the slider opens in the middle and the symmetry matters for the room.
Stack to the wall
Stack against a wall section next to the slider so the panels are completely out of the opening when not in use.
Five approaches for sliding glass doors.

Hunter Douglas Luminette — the workhorse
Vertical sheer shading engineered for sliding doors and wide windows. Soft fabric vanes on a sheer backing, rotated by a pull-wand or PowerView motor. Better-looking than traditional vertical blinds and doesn't flap. The most common solution we install on OC slider openings.

Panel-track shades
Flat fabric panels that slide on a track, similar to a Japanese shoji screen. Each panel is a single piece of fabric, typically 12 to 24 inches wide. Panels stack to one side when fully open. Cleaner than verticals, works well in modern interiors.

Custom drapery on extended track
Custom drapery on a ceiling-mounted track wider than the slider opening. Panels stack to one side or split-stack to both sides. Linen, silk, and performance-blend fabrics. Motorized drapery tracks (Lutron-controlled) are common on wider sliders.

Bypass or bi-fold plantation shutters
Custom basswood plantation shutters on a bypass track (panels slide in front of each other) or bi-fold track (panels fold accordion-style). Permanent integrated look. Used on sliders in traditional and Spanish architecture.

Roller shades on wide sliders
Single very-wide roller shades can work on sliders, especially when motorized. The roller tube has to be heavy-duty to span the width without sagging. Solar shades are common for west-facing sliders. Cordless operation isn't practical at this width — motorized is the right call.

Luminette and panel tracks cover the same functional need as traditional vertical blinds without the visual tradeoffs.— Field notes from slider installs
Why we don't install traditional vertical blinds.
The default solution for sliders for decades was vertical blinds: stiff vinyl or fabric vanes on a sliding track. They're inexpensive, but they flap in the breeze when the door opens, they bend and break easily, and they look dated against modern OC architecture. We don't install them.
They flap in the breeze
Stiff vanes catch any air movement when the door opens. The flap is audible and visible.
They bend and break
Vinyl vanes deform with daily use. Replacement vanes rarely match the originals.
They look dated
Against modern OC architecture, vertical blinds read as the cheapest option, not an intentional choice.
Better options exist
Luminette and panel tracks cover the same functional need without the visual tradeoffs.
